tonight I tread that ancient bloodline
with time’s ashes kiting overhead
with mice at the end of their valedictions
the snap of a chrysalis in the bushescoyote synergy in the hills air-coloured eyes
Talmudic curl of their tongues behind each
and every bark
coyotes coydogs their phantom limbs
carrying them back to the Pleistocene each night
back to their petroglyphs nails on stone.
